Today, we want to share a Q&A from Ethan that tells a bit about his photography background, his company, photography style and more! We will also be showing off a few of the other awesome photos from The Light&Co.
How did you first get into photography?
“Shortly after my business partner and I became friends we went on a trip to San Francisco to see him perform in Wicked. Since I am an East Bay Native I was excited to show her around. We happened to borrow her brother’s DSLR camera. I had always had an interest in photography and played around with different photos and editing on my myspace page (back when that was a thing), but this was my first experience with a DSLR. I instantly felt connected and upon our arrival home I had a friend who needed some photographs done and so we planned a shoot and I was hooked. I started photographing anyone and anything I could and learning all I could. I was asked to shoot my first wedding later that year. We started eWatts Photography in 2011 and changed our name to The Light&Co in 2016 as our team began to grow.”
Do you only photograph weddings?
“I started out photographing strictly portraiture and then moved into weddings within my first year of photography. This is a passion that I have followed since I was 18, my interests in what I want to photograph have shifted as I’ve gotten older and developed other interests in a variety of ways. I personally love landscape and travel photography. The moment I am able to step into a different culture or unknown location sends my adrenaline through the roof, and I love finding unique ways to capture my experiences in a new place. I also love working alongside local businesses. My passion in yoga allowed me to collaborate with a local studio which led to me being able to gain an education as a yoga instructor pro bono.
I love feeling passionate about what I am interested in and photography has allowed me to follow my heart, yet still utilize a skill that I have been working on for the past 8 years.”
Where is the coolest place you have ever shot a wedding/engagement?
“Wedding? Hands down New Zealand. Elopement would be Belize. And besides wedding photography, I’d have to say Iceland was absolutely phenomenal.”
What is your absolute favorite thing to photograph?
“I love photographing people in love and nature, so combining those two things together is incredible. In the last two years we started offering adventure engagements to our couples. We go with couples to National Parks and destination locations and camp or stay overnight. That not only gives us opportunity to shoot couples in amazing locations, but spend more time with our clients and getting to know them better. Our clients LOVE them and we get to bond with our clients in places that make us feel alive and at peace with our surroundings.”
What type of style would you say fits you best?
“Adventurous and fun. I love people and getting to know who they are. I love making people feel beautiful and I want to do my best to bring out that personality and capture it on film.”
What is your most favorite shoot you have ever had and why?
“I can’t name just one. We try to make every shoot unique to each couple and the best part of my job is the incredible friendships I’ve made along the way. We are lucky enough to get the best clients and so every session is an adventure and I love it.”
What was your first reaction when you found out you won?
“Honestly shocked. Then excited. Then shocked again. I haven’t entered many contests before and this past year or so I’ve been wanting to push myself out of my comfort zone and it was so exciting to receive an email saying that the photo we had entered ending up winning.”
What type of camera do you use and why?
“I have been shooting with the Nikon D4 for the past four years and I have loved every minute of owning it. The amount of power and versatility it provides allows me to walk into any shoot, in any environment knowing with full confidence that if I know how to use my equipment, I will be able to capture the image I desire.”
