Today we want to introduce you to SnapKnot member Heatherley Doan with Heatherley Bloom Photography. She is a local photographer in Denver, Colorado and has a true passion for what she does that began when she was a child… and that passion shows in her beautiful photos!
We asked Heatherley a few questions so we could get to know her a little better. You will also get a see a sample of her beautiful wedding and engagement photos. Enjoy!
Tell us a little about yourself.
“I was recently married and just adore my husband to pieces! I have a 14 year old daughter who has the coolest love of music. I have been taking her to concerts since she was 7. I just recently moved from Jacksonville, Florida to Denver, Colorado. I always thought the beach was my “happy place” but I am really enjoying these mountain views. Not only am I a photographer, but I have a photography clothing line called “Photog Life” and I mentor about 10 photographers every three months to help them understand the business and how to be successful. I truly enjoy teaching others and helping them live out their passion for photography. I love seeing them grow!!!”
Why did you choose to be Photographer?
“I really never felt like I chose this path. Not to get sappy, but when I was 7, my dad passed away and there were not many pictures of me and him together. I became obsessed with my mom’s 110 film camera (showing my age, haha) and was pretty much known for always having a camera in my hand and in a friends’ face. I even had my own darkroom in college. I still have it actually, it is just a bit dusty. Even though I loved taking pictures, it wasn’t until 2010 that I really went for it. It was the best decision I ever made.”
How long have you been a photographer and what experiences do you have?
“Well I guess you can say I have over 30 years if you count my childhood. ;) But I feel like professionally I have been doing this for 7 years. I am self taught and have spent many sleepless nights teaching myself how to use my camera and how to edit. It was hard 6-7 years ago because there just wasn’t good content available when I started. I wouldn’t change it for the world because I love learning! I am still pushing myself to keep up with everything I can, mostly so I can share it with others and of course give my clients the best experience that they deserve.”
What is your style of photography?
“My style of photography is candid and photo journalistic. When I sit down with a bride and groom and they start mentioning Pinterest, I listen and politely tell them that I do LOVE Pinterest but I am here to create their love story. I don’t want to spend the day trying react someone else’s pictures. Pinterest is amazing for inspiration. I used it for my wedding planning, however I think it is important to capture the day as it truly happens and you really need someone that understands that.”
Who or what are some of your influences on either a personal or professional level?
“I am pretty much obsessed with Sam Hurd. Even though my style is different, I love how he challenges himself to get creative, even in difficult situations. He always amazes me and I can’t get enough of his work!”
Do you prefer Nikon or Canon?
“I am a Nikon girl!”
Do you have any good wedding stories?
“Yes! I have so many. A recent one I did the bride and groom were about to do the garter toss. The DJ put on a fun but naughty song. The groom started to get excited and slowly took off his jacket. He tossed his jacket in the crowd, which happened to be the brides dad! He dived under the brides dress right after. However, the jacket hit the dad right in the face! I know he didn’t mean it like that but it was hilarious and everyone got a good laugh out of it. Of all the people!”
What is your preferred camera equipment?
“I carry professional full frame Nikon camera bodies. I love my Nikon D750 and I have a D800 as a back up. I have 7 different lenses and I am obsessed with off camera flash. It really helps in harsh situations when we can’t control the weather or light.”
What would you recommend for a couple starting their search for a wedding photographer?
“I think it is SO important meet with them first. Making sure you are good fit with each other is key. You spend all day and MONTHS before talking and if you don’t click, it can make for an awkward day. I also believe that once you book them, you need to trust that they will be amazing!! Look at their work too. It’s important that you like their style so always ask to see a gallery or two.”
What is next for you and your business?
“My goal is capture as many love stories while I am colorado as I can. My family and I did not expect this move but we are excited to be here. I hope to see as much as this state as possible. So if it is Elopements or full wedding day coverage, I am ready for the adventure!”
