Our list of Jacksonville, Florida wedding photographers had better make room for Christy Whitehead, whose photography experiences make her one to be reckoned with. Maybe because her work history includes been chased by an alligator, sleeping in hostels, and running after cops chasing bad guys during her stint as a reporter for several police magazines, Christy now considers her style to be laid back and photojournalistic. Having this ability to capture the unique allows her to deliver fun wedding photos with a “bunch of pop”.
Although Christy has been to over 20 countries, she has never photographed a wedding outside of the United States. She would love to be able to shoot a wedding in Puerto Rico, where her husband’s family is from, but would also settle for Italy (she’s been to the Vatican/Sistine Chapel twice!), Ireland, or really anywhere Europe.
“I have done sessions outside of my state and I love that being an outsider, I see things completely different than the locals, and my shots are a little more unique because of this.”
While obtaining her degree in journalism, Christy was often asked to take pictures for the newspaper she freelanced for, along with her normal writing duties. She enjoyed it and kept learning, and before too long, she was doing more photography than writing and everyone was asking her to shoot their weddings! She has been a professional now since 2000 and proudly uses Canon equipment for all her shoots.
Christy strives to maintain a unique and individual style, which allows her to create fun wedding photos for her clients. She deliberately avoids following too many photography blogs because she feels that doing so can train one’s brain into “doing what other photographers are doing”.
“I’m not someone else, I don’t mind looking for inspiration, but I want my images and style to be mine.”
Christy has experienced some pretty exciting and stressful wedding situations throughout her career. One of her favorites includes a bride that was 3 hours late to her own wedding! She had bought 2 dresses for $15 each on clearance. She trashed one in a shoot before the wedding and washed it. At the wedding her real dress wouldn’t zip so she had to throw on the trashed one, which luckily, didn’t give away its past. She couldn’t find her marriage license, so Christy’s assistant went looking for it (and found it). The bride was writing her vows while she was getting hair done, and then sent Christy to do photos of the reception site when the bride’s sister showed up and informed her that the officiant was leaving in 5 minutes if the bride didn’t show up.
“We hauled it,” says Christy. “While running, my $2,000 lens flew out of my bag and hit the cement. I told my assistant to grab it and keep running. The ceremony went beautifully and those clients still come from out of state to see me.”
This story is proof that you want a photographer you can count on for your special day. Christy suggests that if you are stuck between two photographers, hire them both to do your engagement session. It may cost a little more upfront, but it will allow you to get to spend some more time with the photographer, see how you work together, and ultimately ensure that you will be happy come your wedding day.
