Today we want to introduce you to SnapKnot member Teresa Curry with Teresa Marie Photography. She is a local photographer based out of Los Angeles, California and has a true passion for what she does… and it shows in her amazing work!
We asked Teresa a few questions so we could get to know her a little better. You will also get a see a sample of her beautiful wedding and engagement photos. Enjoy!
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
“Hi! I’m Teresa. After working in the corporate world for most of my adult life, in 2010 I decided to pursue professional photography full-time. Beautiful moments and beautiful images move me. I wanted to enjoy my life’s work and to feel passionate about what I do every day. I photograph weddings, maternity, newborns, families, events, headshots and architecture. My family includes my three beautiful kids (1 teenager & 2 toddlers), my better half and my two chihuahuas. I take inspiration from my own family when photographing yours.”
Why did you choose to be a photographer?
“I’ve always been a creative person, since I was young. I love art and design and I was always photographing or creating something! When I had the opportunity to finally take the leap to become a pro, I never looked back. I love everything about photography but mostly, I love shooting weddings. In my quiet moments I realize I have the best job – I get to tell a couple’s love story. A story they will tell their family for years to come. Documenting a couples journey compares to nothing else! I love, LOVE.”
How long have you been a photographer and what experience do you have?
“I have been a professional, full time photographer for five years. I’ve photographed beautiful, intimate weddings to large, elaborate ones. I take multiple workshops and classes throughout the years to keep me up to date on everything technical. I am always challenging myself creatively and love to grow as an artist. I will forever be learning and growing.”
How would you classify your style of photography?
“Ahhh – my favorite question. I would say that I gravitate towards the dreamy, airy, romantic style of photography while pairing that with a photojournalistic style. I believe in capturing moments when people don’t even know I’m photographing them. Moments like the mother of the bride as she wipes a tear away, the laughter between the bridesmaids or the groomsmen sharing a toast, those are always so genuine and beautiful. My goal is to tell my client’s entire wedding story through their photos; I don’t want to leave out anything!”
Who or what are some of your influences on either a personal or professional level?
“Oooh – I would have to say that my biggest influences are Jose Villa & Elizabeth Messina. I’ve always loved their style of fine art photography. The way they capture the light and the emotion is magical. Swooooooooon.”
Do you have any really great wedding stories?
“Oh yes. As a wedding photographers, we shoot your wedding but we also help with hair, makeup, getting in the dress, fixing the dress, holding the flowers, nerves, grabbing snacks, tipsy guests, etc. etc. With that said, most recently I had a bride put on her dress and the clasp that was supposed to hold the back of her dress up was missing! She was understandably really upset. Thankfully housekeeping had a little sewing kit and I grabbed the needle and went to town. I think it is important to tell you that I have never in my life sewn as much as a button on a shirt or a tethered hem. My goal wasn’t to audition for next Project Runway but to sew that dress together as secure as possible! It was a success and I was so relieved to find out that she had a second dress to change into immediately after the ceremony! Pheeeew.”
What’s your preferred type of camera equipment?
“I’m a Canon shooter. I am currently using the Canon 5D Mark III as my main camera but I have several back up cameras. I use only professional grade “L” lenses – my most prized possessions. I love any opportunity to buy something new! Some girls love shoes, some love purses… I love gear!”
What would you recommend for a couple starting their search for a wedding photographer?
“First, look through their portfolio – Do you love their work? Do you love their style? Then set up a meeting! I always love having a cup of coffee or lunch with my clients. Sometimes it’s not possible to meet in person, but thank goodness for the next best thing – I love to Skype/Face Time too! It’s important to me to get to know my clients and most of my clients become great friends – I want your photographs to reflect your love, your history and your future. You’re also going to spend your hard earned money and a lot of time with your wedding photographer – you should get along well.”
What is next for you and/or your business?
“Next for me…international & destination weddings! I love to travel and capture the beauty of the different parts of our country and our world! My business has been rapidly growing and changing – I’m so excited for 2015 and all of the beautiful love stories I get to tell!”
