A warm, SnapKnot welcome to Nicole Medcalf, owner and chief photographer at Medcalf Photography. Born and raised in the great state of Alaska (land of the best light there is…”the midnight sun”), this talented photographer specializes in fresh and fun, yet elegant wedding photos.
Nicole describes the story of how she fell in love…with her first camera (a Canon AE-1).
“We fell in love at the age of 14 when I began spending hours in the darkroom developing my own black and white prints. I can still remember the feel of the reel and the aroma of the chemicals. A big thank you to my little sister, who for the price of an ice cream cone (about $.35), would be my muse for hours.”
“If I had to words to describe myself I would go with fun and bold. My favorite color is red, so kudos to Canon for putting a red ring on all of their L series lenses. I’m extremely competitive and still enjoy playing fast paced volleyball in the fall and winter.”
Nicole also loves music and can dance (her favorite song of all time is “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins, and she often has impromptu dance parties with her boys.) In addition, she loves romance and mystery; her favorite movie is Pride and Prejudice and you will regularly find a Dan Brown or Steve Berry novel on her night stand. If she’s looking for “lighter” reading she will admit to picking up the 5o Shades of Grey series and a bit of Janet Evanovich.
Despite her obvious talent, Nicole didn’t always expect to become a photographer. She enjoyed it in high school, but eventually went on to study math. After graduating in 2003, Nicole hopped on the “life freeway” as she calls it and got married. She started teaching high school math, had baby boy #1 (Jordan) in 2004, and baby boy #2 (Logan) a short 15 months later. She then made the difficult decision to stay at home with her boys, which paved the way for her to brush the dust off her old camera and rekindle her true passion: photography. She established Medcalf Photography in 2006.
Now Nicole has the best of both worlds: her dream job and time with those she loves the most- her husband, Matt, and her two boys.
“Life is short and I have been blessed with the opportunity to create a business in an industry that I love.”
When Nicole is not behind a camera, she is with her boys on the golf course, basketball court, baseball field, football field…you get the point. Her kids are very athletic.
Nicole has some great advice for couples just starting their search for a wedding photographer, which begins with what she calls “the three P’s” of choosing a photographer: portfolio, personality, and price.
“Portfolio comes first because you must be in love with our work and style. Check out websites, blogs, and don’t hesitate to ask to see an entire online wedding gallery. Be sure to pay close attention to the reception photos as well because that is where you will be able to see if the photographer knows how to use flash to light dark spaces (very important once the sun goes down).
Next is personality…you need to like your wedding photographer, you will be spending quite a lot of time with them and if you have a good relationship the two of you will be more comfortable in front of the camera (making for better pictures). We are always happy to set up a time to meet with you and see if we make a good fit.
Then price, yes reality is we need to fit, usually about 10-15% of your total wedding budget. Just remember that your wedding day goes by in the blink of an eye and you will not regret spending the money on a quality photographer!”
At this time, Medcalf Photography works with weddings, seniors, families, and newborns. In 2011 they also saw the addition of FlashMe Booth photo booth. Nicole says that if you have not experienced the fun and excitement of having a photo booth at a wedding, you are missing out. Guests of all ages love dressing up and having their silly photos printed on site.
Weddings and engagements are Nicole’s favorite shoots, and she looks forward to documenting your love story. Mention this post and receive a complimentary 11X4 with your package!
