Bellingham, Washington wedding photographer Courtney Bowlden is one of over 100 photographers who have joined SnapKnot in just the last couple weeks. Courtney was kind enough to take a few minutes to answer some of our questions. Be sure to check out Courtney’s SnapKnot portfolio after reading about how she got her start in photography (and how Lady Gaga inspires her) below:
Tell us a bit about yourself: I am a wife (8 years married), mother (6 y/o girl and 2 1/2 y/o boy) and I love having my own business. Music is my number one passion in life. I have always enjoyed art and I have always wanted to be a photographer, but only started learning photography in the last could years. I feel I picked it up quickly, and I do my own thing with it. I like being different.
Why did you choose to become a photographer? I have always loved seeing peoples candid moments. Things caught when no one thought there was a camera around. Photography allows me to get those moments and cherish them like they were my own. I also hate working for big corporations and love being my own boss.
How long have you been a photographer? Since 2009
How would you classify your style of photography? Photo-journalistic. I dont like posing pictures, I like to let moments happen naturally.
Who or what are some of your influences on either a personal or professional level? I’m inspired by people who have struggled to get to where they are. People who beat the odds. But to be honest, I have to say Lady Gaga. As cheesy as that sounds, I love that she embraces who she is and doesn’t care what other people think of her. I also am inspired every single time I shoot a wedding. How can anyone not be inspired when going to a wedding?!
Do you have any good wedding stories? I’m always very touched at weddings. I love seeing the love between the bride and groom. My marriage becomes stronger after every wedding I shoot. But there was one that really stood out to me. It was the lst wedding I shot with a friend, and I remember being up in the rafters crying when the groom was singing his bride a song. It was so sweet. Of course I got pictures of it, but it was just so sweet and the words were so beautiful.
What’s your preferred type of camera equipment? I use a Canon Mark2 D5, and I love it, but I also like some qualities that Nikon has in their cameras. I typically use a 24-70 lense but I’ll switch it up to a 70-200 for weddings so I dont have be to right in their face to get pictures.
What would you recommend for a couple just starting their search for a wedding photographer? Ask questions. Its okay, we dont mind =) Its also so importrant to like your photographer and that you get along well with them. 9) Any fun personal facts we should know about you? I love getting to know new people. Its almost a type of high for me. I see beauty in everything, even when I lived in the desert for 3 years.
