Boston-based wedding photographers Team Yu Photography were nice enough to answer a few of our questions so that you could get to know a bit about them.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi, we are Anna and Tony Yu, a husband and wife team of wedding photographers based in Boston, MA. We are extremely happy to do what we love together, and are proud parents of our 4 year old munchkin, who’s got some mad modeling skills :)

Why did you choose to become photographers?

Photography has been a hobby for quite a long time until the day we shot a wedding for our best friends, fell in love with the process and we’ve been shooting weddings ever since.

How long have you been shooting together?

We’ve been shooting professionally for almost 4 years. In this short period of time we’ve had the pleasure to photograph so many incredible people, that it feels like it’s been at least 10 :)

How would you classify your style of photography?

We think of our style as fusion of documentary and fashion photography. By combining our unalike visions, and by complimenting each other on so many different levels we bring wholesomeness to our work. Our goal is to tell your story through our work, to capture real moments, real emotions – real YOU.

Who or what are some of your influences on either a personal or professional level?

Anna: I get fascinated by the beauty and complexity of relationships. In this humongous world it is not easy to find the right person to share your life with, and being able to meet so many wonderful couples that did, brings me a great amount of joy! Both on a personal and professional levels we definitely get inspired by each other. Exploring this wonderful world together, having so many mutual interests and constantly sharing ideas is what drives us towards new projects and makes us take risks. Life is never boring :)

Tony: I am constantly inspired by the close people around me, my wife and our daughter. The relationship between them is just amazing! I draw my artistic inspiration from the world of fashion and high end portrait photography. There are too many photographers out there whose work I like to list them here.

Do you have any good wedding stories?

We definitely have some, but they are waaaaay too personal to share
here, sorry :)

What’s your preferred type of camera equipment?

As some great photographers will tell you, it’s not the camera that takes wonderful pictures, it is the photographer behind that camera who makes great images. Couldn’t agree more with that statement, but having the best gear does make our lives a little easier :) With that said, we are Canon shooters and we spare no expense to make sure we have the best gear for the job. And yes, we always have backups, just in case.

What would you recommend for a couple just starting their search for a wedding photographer?

One most important recommendation we have is to make sure you like your photographer(s) and you trust that they will do a splendid job capturing your day. And by liking your photographer we don’t mean like their work (that goes without saying), we mean that you like her/his/their personality. After all you will spend the most amount of time on the day of your wedding with your photographer(s). There is something truly magical about a single moment being frozen in an image, and that’s what makes photography so valuable. You probably don’t want to look stiff during that very moment because you weren’t comfortable around your photographer. You will treasure your wedding images for years to come, and we always say that wedding photography should be considered an investment, rather than an expense. With this in mind, make sure to meet with your chosen photographer(s) in person. Finding the right person will surely make your day more enjoyable, relaxing and fun. You have to be a great fit for each other!

Any fun personal facts we should know about you?

our first language is…Russian. People always get very surprised to find out that Tony being 100% Korean fluently speaks, reads and writes in Russian. We are very lucky that we share the same background, as we both moved here from Russia.

the happiest day of our life was…our wedding day, but that was until our daughter was born :) Her birth gave our life a totally different meaning, and made us appreciate what we do even more.

we have our weaknesses…I’m addicted to coffee and all kinds of spicy food; Tony gets easily hooked on computer games (that is when he has time to spare, which almost never happens lately!)

if we didn’t become photographers…we could totally be gymnasts! :) When Tony was little he actually dreamed of making it big in the world of gymnastics. He trained really hard and achieved a lot during his school years. I was on a team too, doing very well in sports gymnastics, but ended up going to the university for teaching, and Tony got into law school :)

we are looking forward to…traveling the world, shooting, learning new things and getting new experiences, and of course, meeting YOU!
