We were able to connect with Gavin & Erin Wade, a husband-and-wife wedding photography team out in Orange County, CA, through the fabulous Zida of Studio Z Mendocino. As two of our newest photographers featured on SnapKnot, Gavin & Erin were nice enough to answer a few of our questions. Learn more about them below after this great photo of Gavin & Erin:
Tell us a bit about yourselves.
Hello! We are Gavin and Erin Wade! A husband and wife photography team based out of Orange County, California. We met a little over 2 years ago (EHarmony works!) and have been over the moon for one another ever since! We now have the amazing blessing of being invited by couples all across the county to document one of the most amazing days in their lives! When we aren’t behind the camera, you’ll find us out and about being active with our puppy Ella and enjoying the California sunshine. Erin is a fitness junkie and loves her spin classes. Even Gavin (who has a degree in Kinesiology) gets put to shame on a weekly basis!
Why did you choose to become photographers?
We started really pursuing photography about 4 months into our relationship. Both Erin and I owned our own businesses and had really lost the fire and passion for what we were doing for over 40 hours per week. It got to a point where we sat down and asked one another…”If you could do it all over again, what would you do?” To each of our own astonished reactions, we both said photography!
Needless to say, we went off the next day and decided to spend our life savings on camera gear and see if our passion could become a profession! With the help and mentorship of some of the best photographers in the country, we are constantly striving and challenging one another to be the very best we can be in order to provide our brides with consistent and amazing images!
How long have you been photographers?
While we’ve been exposed (yay for corny photography humor!) to photography for a while, we have been shooting professionally for two years and have been shooting weddings full time since we got married in October!
How would you classify your style of photography?
Our style is crisp, clean, fun, and romantic! We love taking any situation, any location, and coming away with an image that will never go out of style and that makes a bride gasp and well up with excitement about her day and the man she is about to marry. We love capturing the moments you never saw, the details you poured your heart into creating, and the celebration which marks to beginning of an amazing journey as husband and wife!
Who or what are some of your influences on either a personal or professional level?
First and foremost, our faith plays a role in all that we do! We strive to approach everything with integrity and know that what we do is more than a business; it’s a relationship with two people who are about to entrust us with one of the most important days in their lives! It’s that relationship that comes first and foremost, and what comes from that is a trust and atmosphere of comfort leading up to the wedding day!
We find inspiration in the most random places, haha. It could be on the cover of Vogue, in a music video, or even a Disney movie! Whatever captures beauty in a pure and timeless way…we love it and can learn from it!
Do you have any good wedding stories?
Oh gosh, haha…just a few ;) We’ve had the couple turn around and just as the pastor was about to announce them as husband and wife *BAM* the ring bearer pass out right in front of the them. The poor little guy was burning up in the black tux in that 100 degree heat and just couldn’t help it. Everyone rushed to help him and got some cold water on him and he was fine just a few second later, but I must say that was something I only thought I’d see on You Tube!
And no…and didn’t take any pictures of him passed out in front of the bride and groom. There are some things you wouldn’t mind letting fade away with time, haha. I can just see that poor kids parents whipping out that photo on prom night and embarrassing the heck out of him!
What’s your preferred type of camera equipment?
We shoot only Nikon equipment, using both the D700 and D3 camera bodies as well as the best lenses Nikon makes. We take advantage of their awesome zoom capabilities which allow us to be as non intrusive as possible during the wedding day and yet still capture those amazing moments as if we were right next to you :)
What would you recommend for a couple just starting their search for a wedding photographer?
We’d say that there is so much more to choosing your photographer than just by the quality of their images (or their price tag). Just as important, if not more so, is whether or not you feel like you connect with your photographer! After all, you’re inviting them to your wedding, they are representing you to your guests, and let’s face it…you’ll be spending a LOT of time with them on your big day. Can you trust them to be in your corner, roll with the punches, listen to your needs, deliver amazing results, AND have a great time doing it? In so many ways, this experience is what you are paying for…and it’s worth top priority when planning and budgeting for your wedding!
Any fun personal facts we should know about you?
Oh man, do you want the long list or the short list?! Haha, we wear our hearts on our sleeves so you can find out tons more about us through either our blog, Facebook, or Twitter!
If you watch or are a fan of the TV show Friends, it will take you all of two seconds to realize that Erin is a Monica and Gavin is Chandler…and we wouldn’t change a thing :)
