A warm, SnapKnot welcome to one of our most recent Edmonton wedding photographers, Davin Gegolick. Davin and his wife, Lisa, comprise DavinG Photography and like to capture wedding images as naturally as possible.
Tell us a bit about yourself. My name is Davin Gegolick & I love photography! Both my wife (& assistant), Lisa & I operate DavinG Photography based out of small town Vegreville, Alberta.
When I first started in photography, I primarily photographed landscapes & although I still love capturing the odd photo of the country side, I’ve been drawn to portrait photography. I have a fascination with the natural beauty of the human eye & how it draws in the viewer.
At this point, I like to think of myself as a freelance photographer who loves the creative components and new challenges involved with turning life into art.
Why did you choose to become a photographer? I’ve always had a fascination with capturing memories by way of taking photos. I love working with people & receiving positive feedback after delivering images to my clients. Photography is a rewarding occupation that is both inspiring & challenging.
How long have you been a photographer? Whether I was playing around with my dad’s Canon Ftb or my very own Polaroid I-Zone, I’ve had a passion for photography at a very young age. When I treated myself to a DSLR in 2008 my hobby grew to a whole other level. I’ve now been shooting professionally for about 2 years & enjoy learning something new every day.
How would you classify your style of photography? I strive to capture the most natural images possible, using editing software to merely enhance the already natural beauty of my subjects. I’m able to capture natural images by creating a relaxed & confident environment. You’ll never find me ‘selective coloring’ images!
What’s your preferred type of camera equipment? I shoot Canon! I use only professional equipment & my favorite lenses are my: 50mm f/1.2, 24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8 IS. I use the 100mm f/2.8 macro for detail shots & have an arsenal of Speedlites triggered with Pocket Wizards when I want to use off-camera lighting. I use both the 5D Mark II & 7D for shooting weddings & occasionally select a few vintage cameras from my vast film collection to get that film look. Although my list of equipment is extensive, I choose to keep my equipment to a minimum when shooting weddings.
What would you recommend for a couple just starting their search for a wedding photographer? Do a lot of research! Start with searching for local talent & choose a photographer who you feel can capture your special day as you see it. Look at the portfolios of photographers & find a photographer whose images reflect you as a couple. If you like black & white images mixed in with color images, ensure you choose a photographer whose portfolio includes black & white images. Also keep in mind your budget. You typically get what you pay for so think twice about hiring your friend just because you ‘know’ them personally. Also be weary of hiring the ‘uncle Bob’ photographer. Remember: your wedding day may be the most memorable day of your life so choose a photographer who will provide professional images that you can look back on in the years to come.
Any fun personal facts we should know about you? Although I am a wedding photographer, I also shoot pretty much anything. I shoot: maternity, newborn, engagement, commercial, family, portrait, & animals. When I’m not taking photos, I work as a Planning & Development Officer at the County of Minburn & teach drum lessons at night. I enjoy hanging out with friends & family & LOVE traveling!
For all brides who contact me directly, I will deduct $150 from any of my wedding packages!
