Do you and your fiancé love to travel? Why not start earning miles for an airline with your wedding registry to help kick-start your travel as a married couple? You could even use the points you have earned for the flight to your honeymoon. We found this great article on The Points Guy all about earning miles with a registry and we just had to share some of the great tips!
Airlines That Offer Wedding Registries for Earning Miles
Some airlines with frequent flier programs will allow you to create a registry online to earn miles.
US Airways is one who offers this online registry. You will set up your registry page with a specific goal for your miles that you earn. For example, you could say “Our Honeymoon in Hawaii.” You can specifiy the amount of miles you need and you can personalize your registry by adding photos of you both. You can post the registry on Facebook, Twitter and other social media outlets for all your wedding guests to see. Anyone at all can purchase Dividend Miles for you, even if they are not a Dividend Miles member… and members can choose to purchase miles or transfer them from their own accounts! How easy is that?
United also offers a few different registry options for a bride and groom to earn miles. The first is their MileagePlus gift registry that is similar to the US Airways one where couples can create a personalized page to share with family and friends. You can also create a registry for someone else, so if you know the bride, who happens to be your best friend or family member, just loves taking vacations and earning miles, you can create the registry on her behalf for the wedding shower.
The second type of United registry is the TravelBank account, where friends and family members can contribute money directly. That money you can use for your flight.
Or, if you prefer not to do either of those options, you can always purchase a United.com gift card for the bride and groom, and is another great way to fund your honeymoon.
Shopping for Gift Cards
If you are shopping for gift cards, according to The Points Guy, “it is always worth trying to double dip and maximize miles earnings by first purchasing gift cards through a portal, and then making a purchase with that gift card through the portal to get extra points.”
They say that most of the retailers and portals say that you are not allowed to earn bonus points on gift card purchases but most do not track how you actually pay for purchases so many people have success and still earn those bonus points anyway.
A few major shopping portals include:
- Air Canada: Aeroplan EStore
- American: AAdvantageEshopping.com
- Delta: Skymilesshopping.com
- Hilton HHonors: Hilton HHonors Shop to Earn Mall
- Southwest: Rapid Rewards Shopping

Shopping Portals for Wedding Related Purchases
If you are a bride or groom, make sure to also check shopping portals when ordering items like invitations or wedding rings. You can even find bridesmaids dresses on a few shopping portals. A few wedding related vendors that can be found on shopping portals include: Michaels Custom Invites, David Yurman, Nordstroms Bridesmaid Dresses, J. Crew, Shutterfly, ProFlowers and more!
If you purchase a wedding ring from David Yurman, you could take advantage of the 5 points per dollar spent currently offered through the AAdvantage shopping portal. How great is that???
Shopping Portals for Registry Gifts
Shopping portals are also an easy way to maximize simple registry purchases from places like Bed, Bath & Beyond and Pottery Barn. Many offer bonus points per dollar spent through portals so if you need to purchase a gift from there, you can earn extra points or miles… Check out the post here for the exact extra points or miles you can earn.
Purchase AMEX or Visa Gift Cards From Stores That Give Bonuses
Many people simply like to give bride and grooms a Visa or Amex gift card for their wedding gift. If so, you can purchase them from shops including Home Depot, Office Max and Staples, where you can get 5x points using a Chase Ink Bold or Chase Ink Plus card.
If you are booking a room block at a hotel for your wedding, confirm with the hotel in advance if you can get points for those rooms. Otherwise, you may want to simply book your own rate apart from the wedding and earn points which may be worth it in the end!
