Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hi, we are Andrea & Marcus. We love traveling, arts & good food. Andrea is the creative one while Marcus is a pro for technical things. We were born and raised in the middle of Germany. After being a wedding photographer there for 3 years we moved to Zurich in Switzerland. Again 3 years later we needed a new adventure and made our dream come true to live in our favorite city: NYC.
Andrea is outgoing and loves everything about creative & pretty looking things. She is a VOGUE addict and very interested into fashion – she barely leaves the house without red lipstick and a fashionable handbag. Her creative “career” started when she painted the walls, tables & couch in her parents home when she was a little girl (oh yes, she already knew how to make the life more “colorful” ;D)
Marcus is calm & patient. He is crazy about sports & dogs (even when he just sees a dog on television he goes “ooohhh, look a doggie” :D) He is the person who takes care of everything related to computer- and camera-technology as he is very interested in this.
Why did you choose to become a photographer?
It happened by chance that we got into the photography business, it was never “planned”. Marcus was self employed as IT-Specialist, Andrea was studying fashion design & business.
Marcus took photos just as a hobby until one day a good friend of him got married. The friend only planned a small wedding & had no photographer. Marcus “offered” to take some photos as a gift, Andrea assisted him on that day … that was the beginning. Right after the wedding we had sleepless nights because we knew we wanted to do more weddings. So we set up a homepage & 1 year later we had to go full time :)
How long have you been a photographer?
We are now in the wedding photography business since 6 years, full time.
How would you classify your style of photography?
Our photography is modern, a mixture of fashion inspiration & fun & great candids. In our photography you can clearly see that we have a huge crush on fashion, details & people in love.
Who or what are some of your influences on either a personal or professional level?
There are a lot of influences which inspire us every day. We look at magazines like Vogue, Elle etc. and love watching music videos. For us it is very important to look for inspiration outside of the wedding business, as we want to stay true to ourselves & our style. Sure there are some photographers, whose work we like a lot & follow regularly, like Annie Leibowitz, Ellen von Unwerth, Lillian Bassman & some more.
We also get inspired by the love & passion of our couples every day. To see people that much in love and having the chance to take photos of it is the most inspiring thing ever.
What’s your preferred type of camera equipment?
We use Nikon`s D700 for shooting weddings and are very happy with that camera. When we go to weddings we only take things with us which are necessary, that is why our bags are very light weight. We mostly do 8 hours plus wedding coverages so we found out over the years which works best for us not to carry too much.
We both use the same lenses, so in Andrea’s & Marcus’s bag is (besides the Nikon D700): 50mm 1.4, 35mm 1.8, 24-70mm 2.8 & a Nikon SB 900 Speedlight. That’s all (sure, aside from cards, batteries, Flip-It etc).
We have another bag in our car with a macro lens & 2 telezooms (which we rarely use), a14-24mm lens & a back up camera. These are the lenses we only use once or twice a day so we just take them when we have to and bring them back to the car after using. That way we are very flexible & agile on the wedding day as a Boda-Bag & a Kelly Moore bag make it easy for us to carry all equipment on our body.
What would you recommend for a couple just starting their search for a wedding photographer?
I would definitely recommend to look in magazines, on the internet, search engines & wedding related websites to find a style of photography which they like best. As soon as they know which style fits best to their day & what’s out there start writing to photographers to check out their packages and options. When you find someone who fits to your budget & to the style you want your wedding photographs to be go and meet him or her. A personal connection is really important for both the couple and the photographer. Start your search early so there is no need to rush & you have enough time to check everything out and think about it. Trust your heart, in most cases it knows the answer before your brain does ;)
